History

Intent:

At St Mary's Academy we want our children to understand how past events and people have shaped their lives today.

We will:

  • Ensure children have a clear chronological understanding of history
  • Enable every child to develop in terms of their moral, spiritual and cultural development
  • Ensure history develops the children's understanding of justice, courage and moral choices
  • Make direct links between our local and national community
  • Place a high demand on knowledge in history
  • Enrich pupils through trips, visitors and experiences
  • Develop our children's vocabulary, reasoning skills and understaning of the world around them to prepare them to be resilient citizens of the future
  • Prepare children to be ambitious in an ever-changing world

Implementation:

Our Kapow Primary History Cirriculum ensures we are able to fulfil these promises by:

  • Ensuring full coverage of the National Cirriculum
  • Providing learning opportunities that ignite curiosity, nuture critical thinking and develop a comprehensive understanding of local, national and global history
  • Supporting chronology using a timeline to help children to create a mental map of historical events, facilitating connects and analysis throughout their learning
  • Ensuring secure knowledge development through five key strands: Topic knowledge, chronological awareness, substantive concepts, disciplinary concepts and historical enquiry
  • Teaching British history chronologically through the school
  • Providing a rich range of historical sources to develop historical inquiry skills
