Roman Soldier Experience Day

Today was "the BEST day ever!"

We had a visit from Titus Flavius, the Roman centurion, who pust us through our paces in training to be Roman soldiers. We learned to march using Latin words - sin (left), dex (right), stat (halt), intente (stand to attention). We practised using a scutum (shield) and gladius (sword) and formed up in 'testudo'. The teachers got to throw wet sponges at us to check how well protected we were.

We were able to look at some Roman coins and discussed what the images represented and then designed and made our own coins. We found out that Roman soldiers had to provide their own armour and weapons, we considered which two items we would purchase and why.

During the afternoon, we were able to try on some Roman armour and carefully handle some weapons.
