Science Week - Sound

During National Science Week, Year 4 investigated sound. We discovered that sound is created by an object vibrating and that we can feel and see sound as well as hear it.

The children investigated different instrument, identifying which part of it vibrates and used an oscilloscope to see the sound waves that are created. We used decibel meters to measure the volume of different sounds and experimented with how to make sounds louder and quieter. We also investigated how the volume of sounds changes when we move closer to or further away from the source of a sound.

Next we thought about how to change the pitch of a sound and how this affects what the sound wave looks like.

Finally, we investigated how the insulating properties of different materials can be useful in protecting our hearing.
